Transplant Recipient Competitors

The main objective of the Transplant Games is to demonstrate that people with transplants are able to lead normal healthy lives and compete in sporting activities.

Who Can Participate In The Games?

While the Games cater for transplant recipients and those waiting for transplant, it is a community event with activities for everyone.

We have categories for adults, juniors (by age), supporters (donor families, carers, medical professionals, family and friends of transplant recipients) plus events for the general public. Spectators are welcome at all of our sporting activities.

Transplant Athletes Criteria

To be eligible to compete in the Australian Transplant Games transplant participants must be among the following situations:

  • Solid organ and tissue recipients
  • Those with cystic fibrosis
  • Those awaiting transplantation
  • Dialysis patients
  • Corneal recipients
  • Bone marrow and stem cell recipients
  • Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome patients
  • Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome patients
This eligibility status is different from the World Transplant Games criteria which only allow:
  • Solid Organ recipients
  • Bone marrow and stem cell recipients

Tissue donors are also eligible to compete in The Australian Transplant Games alongside solid organ donors as both lead to improving the quality of life and/or the saving the lives of Australians.

Opening The Australian Transplant Games for tissue recipients has been agreed to on the following basis:

Qualification – participants having undergone invasive treatment of a non-cosmetic nature requiring organs and/or tissues (excluding blood) donated by another person.

Heart Valve (human origin) Lung
Bone grafts (human origin) Kidney
Tendon Pancreas, incl pancreatic islets
Cartilage Small intestine

If required for competition purposes, it has also been agreed that in sports where there is a necessity for there to be a division between ‘organs’ and ‘tissues’ it will be based along the lines of eligibility for the World Games.
