Team Australia Ready to Shine in Dresden

By August 11, 2025No Comments

World Transplant Games 2025:

Transplant Australia is proud to announce a strong Australian presence at the upcoming World Transplant Games, taking place from August 17 to 24 in Dresden, Germany. This powerful international event brings together more than 2,500 participants from 55 countries – including solid organ, bone marrow, and stem cell recipients, living donors, donor families, and supporters –  all united in celebrating second chances and the gift of life.

A Team of Inspiration and Resilience

This year, Team Australia comprises 67 athletes including five junior, seven living donors and donor family members, along with 40 supporters, and three team managers, making a total team size of 117 participants. Representing every corner of the country, these athletes wear the green and gold with pride and a shared sense of gratitude. Transplant Australia hosted the 2023 World Transplant Games in Perth, and it is wonderful to see such a strong legacy from that event reflected in the size and spirit of this team.

“Our athletes come with a unique motivation—each carrying a story of resilience and hope made possible by a generous donor,” said Transplant Australia CEO Chris Thomas. “This event is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of life, health, and achievement against adversity.”

From 6-year-old liver transplant recipient Anthony Schiller of South Australia to 82-year-old liver transplant recipient Esther Scott of Western Australia, the team embodies the true spirit of the Games. A remarkable highlight is Victorian Nigel Goldsworthy, who will compete 51 years after his kidney transplant—a testament to the life-extending power of organ donation.

Celebrating Donors, Promoting Donation

The World Transplant Games is also a vital platform to promote organ and tissue donation. It highlights the importance of registering as a donor and, crucially, informing your family of your decision. Currently, more than 1,800 Australians await life-saving transplants, making awareness and registration essential.

“The generosity of donors and their families is the foundation of these athletes’ second chance at life,” said Mr Thomas. “By sharing their stories, we hope to inspire more Australians to register and talk about their wishes.”

You can register as an organ and tissue donor at donatelife.gov.au and ensure your family knows your decision.

A Heartfelt Thanks to Our Supporters

Transplant Australia extends sincere gratitude to the Organ & Tissue Authority and DonateLife, our Official Partner, along with the Australian Sports Commission for their valued support. Thanks also go to the volunteers, coaches, families, friends, and state committees whose dedication has been instrumental in preparing Team Australia for the Games.
