The Annual Walk to End the Wait kicks off for a fourth year in a row on June 14 with altruistic kidney donor Gordon Rutty taking to the streets, hills and parks of the Gold Coast for two weeks.
Gordon is passionate about promoting organ donation and last this year rode his motor cycle with three others from the Gold Coast to Perth to deliver the Gift of Life Baton to the World Transplant Games.
Funds raised through the Walk will be dedicated to building educational programs for living donors in Australia and to encourage more Australians to join the Australian Organ Donor Register.
All donations are fully tax deductible. Transplant Australia is a national charity committed to improving the rates of organ donation in Australia and helping transplant recipients live life to the fullest.
“The aim of everything I do is to increase awareness of the need for those Australians who wish to donate their organs to register on the Australian Organ Donor Registry and ensure they have a conversation with their families about their wishes. Only one in three Australians are registered donors despite the majority(69%) believing that registering is important.
There are more than 1,800 Australians currently waitlisted for a transplant and more than 12,000 additional people on dialysis—many who may need a kidney transplant. Now more than ever, we need more Australians to say “yes” to organ donation.”
