By May 8, 2024No Comments

Transplant Australia has a new Chair following this month’s retirement of Jason Ryan after nine years as Chair and a total of ten years as Director.

Ethicist and business leader, Petrina Coventry, was elected unopposed as the new Chair at a meeting of directors on Monday, May 6.

The role of Chair became vacant as Mr Ryan reached his maximum tenure of 10 years set down by the Australian Sport’s Commission governance principles for all national sporting organisations.

Petrina is an ethicist with more than 20 years’ experience in global leadership roles with The General Electric Company, Coca Cola and Procter & Gamble. She is a director at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (Centre for Male Health), a Board Member of the Skin Cancer College Australasia, Regional Development Australia, and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Institute of Health and Safety and the Australian Human Resource Institute as well as a World Lacrosse Ethics Commissioner. Petrina is the first woman to lead Transplant Australia in its 21-year history.

Petrina congratulated Jason on his term as Chair leading Transplant Australia’s continued professional improvement as the nation’s leading charity for organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

“Over the past nine years, Transplant Australia’s reputation has grown as it continues to meet the governance standards required of the Australian Charities and Not-for -Profits Commission, the Australian Sports Commission and Sport Integrity Australia. This doesn’t happen by chance, and it has taken committed leadership to ensure Transplant Australia’s status is maintained,” Ms Coventry said.

“Over that period Transplant Australia has enjoyed the success of delivering the World Transplant Games in Perth as well as two Australian Transplant Games while also facing significant challenges throughout the COVID Pandemic.

“Jason, supported by fellow directors and the national office, has navigated through this period protecting Transplant Australia’s viability, developing a new strategic plan, and ensuring it be an important charity for many years to come,” Ms Coventry said.

Jason was thankful of the opportunity to lead a charity dedicated towards improving the lives of those waiting for an organ transplant.

“I am especially pleased to see donation rates recovering from pandemic times. Australia must continue to work towards world’s best practice, and we are confident in the strategic plan of the Organ & Tissue Authority and its CEO, Lucinda Barry. I believe outcomes are best achieved when governments work with community partners who are true to their convictions, can be trusted with their word and remain positive, focused on solutions. Transplant Australia is proud of its advocacy work both to government and the transplant professional sector.

“It has been wonderful to work with my fellow directors and the national office, led by CEO Chris Thomas, and of course our volunteers throughout Australia, both on state committees or at the games. It has been a privilege to know so many of you. I wish Transplant Australia the very best,” said Jason.
