This is where it all began. An old grainy photo showing Professor Maurice Slapak CBE running with one of his kidney patients and Professor Harry Lee in 1977. Forty-nine years later, Transplant Australia joins the world in recognising the contribution of Mr Slapak to world transplant sports following his recent passing.
Mr Slapak was the inaugural President of the World Transplant Games Federation from 1978 to 2004 where he was declared President for Life! He organised the very first World Transplant Games in Portsmouth, England in 1978.
Mr Slapak was an extremely good tennis player and struck up a special bond with Mark Cocks AM who chaired the first World Transplant Games in Australia in Sydney in 1997 and was the first CEO of Transplant Australia.
Many years later he enjoyed reuniting with the transplant sports community at the World Games in Newcastle in 2019.
We pass our condolences to Mr Slapak’s family and, along with the World Transplant Games Federation and Transplant Sports UK, remember all the founders of transplant sports who have made such a difference to the lives of others.
