TSANZ Meeting

The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Transplantation Society of Australia & New Zealand wrapped up in Brisbane this week with around 400 participants from our region and beyond coming together properly for the first time since the COVID Pandemic.

Transplant Australia played a key role at the ASM:

  • We sponsored a new Mark Cocks Patient Forum focusing on mental health issues post-transplant. Kidney recipient Emmy O’Neill shared her experience of the role of exercise in managing mental wellbeing and her participation in training camps and the World Transplant Games in Perth.
  • Professor Richard Allen, Medical Director of Transplant Australia, presented a poster on the medical management of the World Games.
  • Our exhibition stand featured a video loop of Transplant Australia’s programs along with a display of transplant games medals and Australian shirts, while we promoted the Living with a Transplant resources and other ways, we support recipients on their journey.

It was great to meet with some of the transplant nurses and physicians and hear their perspectives on how Transplant Australia supports recipients. Many of them congratulated us on the World Games having heard firsthand from their patients who participated in the games.

One highlight was catching up with Dr Brooke Huuskes, who presented a paper at the meeting. Brooke is a kidney transplant recipient, who has been to two World Transplant Games, and is a former chair of Transplant Australia in Victoria.
